Floods at IRS Result in Telecommuting
Thursday July 6, 2006
The Internal Revenue Service building in Washington, DC was badly flooded from the heavy rains that hit the Mid-Atlantic region. With damage to much of its IT equipment, the IRS has agreed to allow some employees to telecommute, including those who were not previously allowed to do so. The IRS sees this as sort of a wakeup call that other government agencies should be prepared to implement telecommuting in times of such disasters. This is all terrific since it's a boost to better acceptance of telecommuting by federal government agencies. The problem that needs to be addressed though is putting proper safeguards in place for security of very sensitive taxpayer information.
