Working at Home Can Lead to Loneliness

Monday August 14, 2006
Do you miss the interaction with co-workers more than you enjoy working at home? Working on your own every day can stir feelings of isolation and loneliness, and, if not addressed, these feelings can lower your productivity and can even lead to depression. Of course, some of us enjoy the solitude and can manage our need for occasional social interaction quite well. This article on Freelance Job News takes a look at some things you can do to combat feelings of isolation that might arise from working at home every day. I know for me, getting out of the house occasionally and interacting with people helps, as does making an occasional short getaway.

If you think this could be an issue for you, you need to carefully consider how important social interaction with others is to you and ways you might overcome it before you start a home business or even telecommuting. You'll want to be sure that you can comfortably handle isolation, know how you can deal with it, or you just may need to reconsider the idea of working at home.

If you are working from home already, what do you do to overcome feelings of loneliness and isolation, and what works for you when you want to connect socially?

In response to your article regarding loneliness, I think it is just natural for us people to feel lonely especially working alone and at home. Of course as you mentioned, there are others who like the solitude because one can simply concentrate and become more effective, but, for some companionship is a plus. Social Interaction is important because human beings are by nature social animals that is why a little interaction with neighbors or friends is worth it.

I agree - the worst thing about having a business out of your home, I miss the interaction of seeing other people. It’s not all it’s cracked up to be.
