Flutist Nancy Shinn decided to take a class in flute repair from Dr. Eldred Spell at Western Carolina University. At the time, she had no idea it would lead to a home business that would change her life. She thought it would be nice to learn something about flute repair in case something happened to her instrument. She also decided to go for a master's degree in flute performance and took additional repair classes. She knew that not many people offered flute repair services, and even fewer knew how to repair piccolos, which are more complicated. She relies on referrals and word-of-mouth along with her web site for new business. She is now also teaching beginning flute repair and is getting known as an authority in flute and piccolo repair.
