Home-Based Business Moms on the Rise

Thursday May 10, 2007
An article in the Toledo, Ohio Blade cites a number of examples of moms who have started home businesses. The article talks about a variety of possibilities for women-owned businesses, from a pair of moms who sell custom diaper bags, to a mom who started a home business offering stuffed-animal-making party and gift kits to one who sells silk-screened T-shirts and sweatshirts and embroidery.

The US Small Business Administration (SBA) reports that women-owned businesses are enjoying a fast rate of growth in the US, with the states of Nevada, Georgia, Florida, New York and North Carolina comprising the top five locations for women-owned businesses. The SBA also reports that as of the latest information available, America's 9.1 million women-owned businesses employ 27.5 million people and contribute $3.6 trillion to the US economy.

The SBA's Online Womens Business Center states its mission as "To assist women achieve their dreams and improve their communities by helping them start and run successful businesses, regardless of social or financial disadvantage, race, ethnicity or business background." Help for mompreneurs is also available through the SBA Womens Business Centers (WBC), which comprise a network of over 100 education resource centers located across the country designed to help women start and grow small businesses. Their mission is to level the playing field for women entrepreneurs who continue to face unique challenges in the world of business.

With the flexibility provided by home-based business, it's no wonder the number of mompreneurs - entrepreneur moms - continues to rise. Once such Mom voiced the sentiment of many mompreneurs in the Blade article when she said, "Our children are into sports, so we've been able to go to sporting events when we want, not when our employers would let us off to go watch them".

(1) Cheryl's Office says:

It is great to see more grants and growth in resources supporting women-owned businesses. I recently helped several woman-owned businesses set up new offices. The SBA grants available to women provide great financing terms on purchasing the entire suite of office furniture. Buying from a woman-owned furniture group will not only help you save time and money, but you will gain a design team that will help you create a productive workspace for your organization.

I think moms tend to make really good home business owners. They have to be very organized and usually very creative to keep the household happy. To add in a home business she loves to do, well, my experience is that they are usually VERY good entrepreneurs.
