9 More Home Business Ideas

Saturday May 12, 2007
My 10 Home-Based Business Ideas for Moms article stirred a bit of a controversy on the net this week. Some women commented that some of my selections made them wonder if they should be offended by my picks. In fact, Deb said, "I think what offended me most was that many of the choices were rather...unskilled."

I think the real-life people who operate these businesses - including those who are profiled in my articles - would argue pretty loudly that they were "unskilled" and frankly, they are the ones I would expect to be offended. Deb goes on to say in her blog that "I spent twelve years in publishing and four years in accounting before becoming a freelance writer. Most moms spent four or more years in college, with another decade on the labor force."

I never implied that these business ideas were for moms who never went to college or spent time in the labor force. That's all irrelevant. In fact, the purpose of putting the ideas out there was to give moms ideas - even mentioning that such a business could provide an alternative to a frustrating search for a work from home job.

Lots of people who start these types of businesses went through four or more years in college and spent many years in the labor force in a variety of occupations. Their home business allows them to do what they love to do instead of slaving away to the demands of others. It also allows them to be home with their famililes. Who's offending whom?

At any rate, my intention was not to offend anyone - just to throw some ideas out there. So here are 9 more home-based business ideas - for moms, dads, single parents, whomever. Remember, they're just ideas intended to get you thinking about the possibilities for your own home-based business - they're not endorsements or recommendations of any kind. What you do depends on you - your interests, talents, etc. Just research, plan and do what truly makes you happy.

These last two sentences are the key to success on the internet. If you have something you’re passionate & knowledgable about it’s just a matter of time on the internet before you connect with others who share the same interest and buy what you have to offer - success!

Knowing how to monetize and promote this though is not trivial. Research is key, but at some point you’ll need to put your tows in the water and get wet. Just take it slowly.

Too many people simply want to make a quick buck and drop their money on anyone who can promise this…

Frankly, I find the whole concept of “Jobs for Moms” offensive. As a proudly child-free woman who chooses to work at home, I hate the marginalization of a lifestyle choice that subconsciously relegates WAH women to the role of breeder.
