Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia Expands Telecommuting

Monday October 6, 2008
According to this article in the Ledger-Enquirer of Columbus, GA, Blue Cross Blue Shield has been allowing some of its workers to work from home and seems pleased with results so far.

So far, according to the article, some 289 of Blue Cross Blue Shield's 1,500 employees in the area are taking advantage of the work at home program by telecommuting from home one to five days per week. Most of those working from home are claims processors, but BCBS of Columbus is planning to expand the program by making it available to some of its customer service workers.

The company, which has had the work from home program in place for almost ten years now, has found that workers who telecommute are often more productive. They've also been able to use some of the vacated office space for other purposes and don't have to worry about the telecommuters not showing up for work or arriving late in inclement weather.

Perhaps most important, at least for those who are looking for a work from home job arrangement, is that BCBS finds that it can draw from a much larger labor pool rather than confine itself only to the local area. Large companies like BCBS typically offer solid benefits packages and good salaries. Happily, as these types of work from home arrangements continue growing in popularity many more workers will be able to have their cake and eat it to - secure a good paying job with strong benefits, yet stay at home too, without getting caught up in one of the many work at home scams that, unfortunately, abound.
