Living by "your wrench and your wits" as a self-employed handyperson (handy man or handy woman) can be one of the better home business ideas and opportunities for the motivated and mechanically inclined. A handyperson makes a living mostly by doing small jobs such as toilet repair, window replacement and basic carpentry for households and small businesses.

If you're particularly good around the house and have some people skills to deal with customers, setting up your own handyperson business shouldn't be too diffiucult or require a great deal of money. With everyone trying to save money in this economy, hiring a handyperson can be far less expensive than a full-blown contractor. Just don't offer work that according to local building restrictions requires special licensing.
