Work from Home Businesses - Computer Repair

Friday February 27, 2009
One quick way to start computer repair work from home businesses is by hunting down spyware lodged in customers' PCs. That alone can produce a volume of computer repair customers, because many folks have neither the time nor the inclination to do it themselves. The average going rate is $100 an hour for computer repairs.

Residential clients pay less, but they may be less hesitant to hire someone not affiliated with a company because they just want their computer problems solved quickly and competently.

Hunting down spyware is a good start but there’s a lot more to it than that. I install backup systems, wifi, network computers, fix printers, do a lot of how-to instruction, and much more for both residential and commercial clients. I charge $70/hr and grossed about $60K last year. Good people skills is every bit as important as solid technical know-how. Your PC-fixing kung fu isn’t worth crap if you cannot engage your client. My avg residential client is 50+ years old and middle-upper class. They love my easy nature, that I don’t patronize/talk over their heads, find good everyday analogies to explain complex things, clean-cut and dress professionally (khakis and polo shirt), have everything I need with me, and show up on time. Word of mouth is vital, but my yellow pages ad is worth more than gold as well. A lot of wannabees come and go, it’s not easy. But it can be done.
