Many of us have at least one hobby. It's something we like to do to pass the time because we find it fun or it's a way for us to escape the pressures of every day life. Having one or more hobbies is all part of being a well-balanced person.
Most of us may never have thought that doing what we love to do and actually making a living out of it might even be possible. Wow, doesn't that sound like fun? Can you imagine making a livelihood from your hobby? It would be a lot more interesting than dreading getting up Monday morning and reporting to a boring old job making someone else rich, wouldn't it?
Well, chances are you can do just that. Many hobbies could actually be operated as a business. All it takes is some business savvy and finding out if there is a market for what you like to do. If there is, you just need to know the best places and techniques to tap that market.
You wouldn't need to quit your day job - if you have one. By starting out part-time you can figure things out as you go along. What works and what doesn't work, for example. And, you can learn what people are really looking for -what their needs are and how you can best meet those needs.
We only get one shot at a life, so why not make the most of it?

Randy — could not agree with you more, it has always been one of my philosophies to try to make my “vacation” part of my “vocation.” My first job was working at marlin fishing tournaments all over the world — not a bad gig. Five years ago I started a small advertising firm where we have focused on bringing in clients that are in the fishing, travel, and adventure outdoor industries so that all of our jobs typically have some aspect of fishing, boating or diving involved in them. This has allowed me to travel extensively for client engagements, to the exact same places I would normally go on vacation.
One warning though, it is probably a good idea to read “The E Myth” before getting started. This fantastic book outlines the challenges that sometimes face entrepreneurs when they go into something they absolutely love… and get better and better at… and their business starts to grow… and before they realize it they are no longer doing the thing they love but are now spending all of their time trying to “run” the business — which is something they now realize they do NOT enjoy. So yes, it is a super idea to try to turn your hobby into a business, as long as you realize that strong business skills and lots of time working on business issues will also be part of the deal.
Thanks for another great post — keep up the superb work — take good care — John
Thanks, John. You’re right – for those who find no pleasure in bookkeeping and the like, running a business can take the fun out of otherwise fun things to do. But then, if the business starts bringing in enough money, the business owner could always hire a freelancer or virtual assistant to take over the business aspects the owner would rather not deal with.
I have to agreed with you about doing something you love as your job!!! But it is hard! I work full time in a hospital on a b-shift, then switch gears to an art studio I have set up for oil painting classes and such. But as tired as I am some days it is so worth it, when i walk into my OWN ART STUDIO and have my own cutomers and such!!!
Deborah:
Congratulation on finding the time to do what you love. No, it’s not easy, but when it’s your passion you can generally find some time to devote to it. Have fun!
Mr. Savvy:
I find your site to be maxed out with AdSense ads and affiliate links. In fact, all of your “Great Business Opportunities” are just links to your affiliates. Seems to me you could offer something more substantive than that. I certainly wouldn’t recommend your site.
