Estimated tax payments are made using IRS Form 1040-ES (PDF), which includes a worksheet you can use to figure how much you owe in estimated tax.
If you paid estimated taxes last year, you probably received a set of 1040-ES forms to use throughout the year. If not, just use the link or your tax software to create the form you need to send in with your payment.
September's payment will be the third of four estimated tax payments due throughout the year, the last of which is due in January of 2011.
For a complete list of payments or credits that could affect your estimated tax payments, see IRS Publication 505. (Specifically, see What's New for 2009 and chapter 2 of Publication 505 for additional information.)
If your state has a requirement for filing estimated taxes throughout the year, don't forget that as well. Generally, state deadlines follow the federal deadlines.
