4 Affordable Mobile Processing Solutions: Take Credit Cards Anywhere

By , About.com Guide

The days of cash carrying customers are over. If you sell goods and services in today's marketplace, you must be able to accept credit cards. To date, this has proven difficult for small and home-based businesses because credit card processing has required costly monthly fees and the purchase of a credit card terminal machine. Businesses have had to weigh whether or not the expenses incurred were worth the benefits being offered to their customers. This is no longer a problem!

Thanks to the brilliant creation of the iPhone and relating internet applications, anyone can accept credit cards -- anywhere. And even better, it is completely affordable -- a business could start accepting credits with little to no out-of-pocket expense. All it takes is a smart phone, like the iPhone, and an internet data plan to get started. Most providers offer a free credit card reader, which hooks straight into your iPhone, iPad or Android and processes transactions over the Internet.

1. The Square

This is my favorite option for mobile credit card transactions. Why? Because the card reader is free, the size of a quarter, and hooks right into the headphone jack. The software is also free and is as simple as downloading a new application from the "app store". But even better, they have simplified the layers and made it into a one-stop shop. There is no set-up fee or a monthly merchant account fee. The Square's pricing plan is very simple -- one 2.75% charge for each credit card swipe. With your processing service comes reporting features to keep track of payments, next-day direct deposit of funds, and fast set-up. In addition, if the card reader isn't able to collect the information, a manual input of the credit card number may be collected.

2. Intuit GoPayment

GoPayment is a product of Intuit, the small business provider of tools such as Quickbooks and Websites. They decided to get into the mobile transaction game. Their product is an option much like the Square. The reader is free and they also offer one single transaction fee of 2.7% for swiped cards or 3.7% for keyed in transactions. Receive confirmation of the transaction within seconds and have the option to email or text a receipt to the customer.

3. Innerfence

Innerfence offers the same basic services as the previous providers, but the pricing is a bit different. There is a fixed monthly fee of $25/month on top of their transaction fee of $0.24 + 1.74%-3.79%. If the credit card information is keyed in, the transaction fee is a bit higher in price. They offer the software free and a card reader for free.

4. PAYware Mobile

Verifone's PAYware Mobile is another viable option, however, it may end up being a much more costly option. The iPhone app is free, but from there, your monthly fees will be dependent upon who you contract for the gateway merchant services (like authorize.net). Likely, there will be a one time set-up fee of $49. The card reader will cost approximately $149, but they will give it to you if you sign-up for a two year contract. Monthly fees for the merchant accounts will run between $20 - $30 per month and transaction fees may be a few cents per transaction or a small percentage of each transaction. You may also be charged a fee if your account remains inactive for a time, so it is important to review carefully who you partner with for the gateway services. Why go with Verifone? It may make sense if you already have a merchant account set-up through them.
