A Facebook profile helps you connect with others on this vast social network. And thankfully, setting up a profile will only take moments, allowing you to begin to connect with friends, clients, customers, and companies. All you need is a valid email address, a digital photo file of yourself, and a few minutes. Facebook is completely free to use and to setup, so there is no need to have financial information available.
Deciding on a Facebook Business or Personal Account
Before you create your Facebook login and set up your profile, if you want to use Facebook to promote your business, you will need to decide if you want to setup a Facebook personal account or a business account. Even if you plan to only use Facebook to promote your business, I recommend you choose a personal account.
Why a personal account? Primarily because you can’t have both. While you might try to get around that restriction, if Facebook finds out you have both you risk getting permanently banned from Facebook and having both accounts closed.
Also, personal accounts can be found in Facebook search, whereas business accounts cannot. Second, business accounts restrict your access to certain information, such as information on those who become fans of your business on Facebook.
Smaller businesses are better off setting up a personal account on Facebook and then creating one or more Facebook Fan pages to promote their business. With a personal account, you can set up multiple fan pages using your personal Facebook account. Plus, as you start getting familiar with Facebook, you may want to use it to keep up with family and friends and not just for business. A personal account allows you to do that.
How to Sign Up for a Facebook Profile and Create a Login
The first thing you need to do is to sign up for a Facebook profile and create your Facebook login. This process doesn’t take a long time and only involves a few pieces of information from you.
To setup either a business or personal type of account, the first thing you’ll need is a valid email address ready to use for Facebook. When you have your email address, go to the Facebook site (www.Facebook.com) and register as a new user (see the image on this page). In this process, you will be asked for your first and last name, the email address you'll be using for Facebook (which you'll have to enter twice to confirm) and the password you want to use in order to log into Facebook in the future. You'll also be asked to provide your date of birth (which you can hide from anyone or everyone within your privacy settings). Of course, you can choose to give a fake name and birthdate, but your email address must be valid as Facebook will test the address before you can completely set up your profile.
After you enter in that information, click the Sign Up button. A confirmation email will be sent to the email address you specified. Use that email to validate your new account and complete your Facebook profile setup.
How to Personalize Your Facebook Profile
It’s always a good idea to create a Facebook profile that shows your personality as much as possible. This will encourage people to want to be your friend, while also helping to make Facebook all the more fun. Some of the ways you can personalize your profile include:
- Using a fun profile picture.
- Adding in your favorite sayings in Favorite Quotations.
- Write a snappy bio.
- Include photo albums.
- Include your workplace.
- Add in your alma mater(s).
- Include your hometown.
- Add your family members.
- Update your marital status.
- What you’re looking for: Friendship, Networking, Men, Women.
You can add as much or as little information as you like. Just keep in mind that you'll need to be aware of your privacy settings if you want to keep some of your information private, accessible only to close friends and family.
But the more you can add to your Facebook profile, the more others will feel they know you – even if you’re on the other side of the planet.
