Wine Consultant Interview - Part 3
Home Business Idea - Independent Wine Consultant

By , About.com Guide

Who decides which wines will be offered and are there requirements or standards that must be met by the vineyards before their wines can be featured by Traveling Vineyard Wine Consultants?

There are several wine sample sets for the consultants to choose from. These are constructed by the company. Consultants do have the ability to customize a sample set as well.

On average, for every one wine featured by The Traveling Vineyard, our wine experts taste 300 wines from all over the world. We have wines from California, Spain, Chile, Italy, South Africa, France, New Zealand, Argentina, Oregon, Australia and many more wine regions.

Do Wine Consultants market other items from The Traveling Vineyard besides wine? If so, do those items comprise a significant portion of the Wine Consultant's earnings?

We have an accessories catalog full of beautiful wine accessories. The wine is the main reason people attend the tasting events. The accessories are a nice bonus!

What's a "typical" wine tasting party hosted by a Wine Consultant like? Does it happen at the consultant's location or somewhere else?

The wine tasting events occur at a host's or hostess’ home. The consultant brings wine glasses and 5 bottles of wine for everyone to sample, walks them through the basic steps of wine tasting, and provides them with information and food pairing ideas for each wine. All of the information is written for us by our team of wine experts. The only thing the hostess provides is cheese and crackers. Other than that, there is no cost to the hostess. Some will supply additional items to pair with the wines, such as chocolate and appetizers. It can be as simple or complex as the hostess chooses.

Guests are able to purchase the wines they sample as well as other wines from our wine catalog. We also have a line of wine accessories which they can purchase. Everything ordered gets shipped directly to the customer from The Traveling Vineyard, so there's no inventory for the consultant to stock. The Traveling Vineyard has a 100% satisfaction return policy. The company takes care of all payment transactions and returns.

This is a home party that people look forward to hosting and attending. Consultants are told repeatedly how much fun the hostess and her guests have.

On average, about how long do tasting events last?

The presentation lasts about 45 minutes to an hour. I usually spend two hours at the hostess’ home, from beginning to end.

How does someone go about requesting a tasting event?

Through contact with a consultant – in person, by email, by phone or through the consultant's web site. (Karen's contact information is provided at the end of this article.)

What do you like most about being an Independent Wine Consultant? Least?

I love everything about being an Independent Wine Consultant. I get to meet people and introduce them to incredible wines which they may not have had the chance to try. I am able to travel all over the world, learn about wine and try many different wines from boutique vineyards around the world.

One of the best parts for me is the team that I have built all over the country. I have made so many friends in places I would never have imagined.

What suggestions for success would you give to a new Wine Consultant?

Love what you do. Have fun learning about wine and sharing this fantastic opportunity with everyone.
