Visit your competitors' sites often.
What are they doing? If their site is better than yours, what do you think makes it better?
Can you implement some of these improvements to your own website? What can you do that would encourage someone to buy from your website before they were willing to buy from your competitor?
You can learn valuable tips even from sites that are not direct competitors. For example, if you're an online merchant, what do the big guys - like Wal-Mart, Target, and Amazon do that you can implement on your own site? You can bet they have full-time staff dedicated to improving their conversion rates.
Which sites do you frequently make purchases on? Why?
