Four of 10 financial planners who have received the CFP (Certified Financial Planner) designation are self employed with average incomes just above $62,000 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Qualifications are changing, but until 2007, you can take the CFP exam if you have a Bachelor's degree in any field and at least three years' experience in financial planning. If you don't have a degree, you can sit for the exam if you have five years' experience in the field. Beginning next year, you'll need a degree to qualify.

There's a lot to learn and the study is rigorous but there are a number of online educational programs available. If you present yourself as a strong candidate, a number of financial services companies offer paid training and support during your training period. You would want to have some sales ability and a strong aptitude for math to succeed.
