Home Business Idea: Search Engine Marketer
Wednesday January 3, 2007
I can tell you from first-hand experience that being a search engine marketing (SEM) or search engine optimization (SEO) specialist is a terrific home business. It helps to have some writing skills and decent HTML knowledge. Other than that, you can pretty much teach yourself what you need to know online through various Internet marketing courses.
At the present time, formal education (degree) programs in this field are few and far between. As a result, there is a shortage of skilled labor available. The field of search engine marketing is very hot right now and should stay that way for the foreseeable future. In most cases, you don't even need a college degree.
If you have prior experience in writing, in HMTL coding and some exposure to general business and marketing areas, you should be in pretty good shape. The pay is good and can only get even better as you get more experience and satisfied clients under your belt. Enrolling in an online course will give you access to available resources that will allow you to go deeper into the field and decide what areas you might like to specialize in.
Am I worried about the competition? No, not hardly. In fact, you'll find Google AdSense ads on my site with links to competitors' sites. Why? As primarily a one-man operation (I have a few content associates on subcontract) I'm busy 7 days a week. Since I can't handle everyone's account, I may as well make money from Google AdSense.
There truly is room in this business for more specialists. If you like computers and want a home business, I say "Come on in, the water's fine". After all, search engine marketing, and especially search engine optimization, is something that, when done properly, can benefit any Web site. With the number of Web sites growing every day, the possibilities for continued strong demand for services seem endless.
Make no mistake, the business is not without its challenges. Improving rankings in Google and for ecommerce websites is especially challenging. Things are constantly changing and, depending on how you look at, that can be very daunting or it can be very invigorating (my view). Juggling multiple clients is another challenge. One of the things I like is that with some decent software, you can easily check a site's performance overnight, while you sleep or while you're watching TV. And then you can see first-hand the results of your efforts. The self-gratification - that you can see how you're doing at any point in time is great. Most of my clients get pretty impressed and yes, it's nice getting complimented for what you do.
I'm sure I'll have much more to say on this topic in the months ahead. Until then, I saw a pretty good overview in an article titled, 11 Reasons Why You Should Consider a Job in Search Engine Marketing. While the article discusses both being an employee and operating as an independent home business, I think it's a pretty decent glance at why I think SEM and SEO are so much fun! In my opinion (biased, of course), the SEM industry is the best home based business opportunity out there!
