Conversion Optimization

By Randy Duermyer, About.com

Definition:

Conversion optimization is the process of maximizing the percentage of Web site visitors who complete a desired action (conversion rate).

For example, if 100 visitors come to your home business Web site on a given day, and during that day 6 purchases were made, your conversion rate would be 6 percent (6/100 * 100)= 6 percent.

By optimizing or maximizing the number of visitors who take a desired action - make a purchase, complete a form, etc. you can increase your sales and profits. When you increase your website traffic and your conversion rate together, sales can increase dramatically.

Examples: Harry sold shoes online. Even though he was able to double his traffic through Web site promotion techniques, his sales were very weak. Henry discovered that his conversion rate was only 2 percent. After implementing some conversion optimization techniques, Henry was able to increase his conversion rate to 8 percent. As a result, his sales quadrupled without any additional increases in site traffic.
